Physical Activities

Dundee Healthy Living Initiative offers a wide range of physical activities at a variety of venues in its local communities. These cater for every level of ability, whether you are a first time exerciser, overweight, elderly or fit as a fiddle.

Activities include:

  • Aerobics
  • Walking Groups including gentle walks
  • Tai Chi
  • TKO (Technical Knock Out)
  • Toning
  • Jogging
  • Pram Pushing groups
  • Chairobics
  • Salsa
  • Belly Dancing
  • Line Dancing
  • Badminton

Dundee Healthy Living Initiative's exercise sessions are aimed at people who do not access existing, more formal facilities and are offered:

  • During weekdays and evenings
  • Locally, with support from DHLI staff
  • In a friendly, non-competitive, community minded atmosphere
  • With crèche facilities if necessary
  • Alongside other opportunities to access health information, events and activities

What is Physical Activity?

  • A general term to describe doing everyday activities in an active way
  • Anything that moves the body and uses energy
  • It includes ordinary activities such as walking, gardening, climbing the stairs and playing with children
  • It can be exercise activities such as swimming, cycling or aerobics
  • It can be sporting activities such as football, tennis or basketball

Recommendations for Physical Activity

For adults, it is recommended that you;

  • Aim to accumulate 30 minutes of moderate intensity, physical activity each day of the week
  • Improve your 'cardio-respiratory' (heart and lungs), and muscle fitness by doing more vigorous physical activity for 20 minutes 3 times a week

The Benefits of Exercise

There are many benefits to being more active and you will begin to feel fitter and healthier as soon as you start. Did you know that physical activity provides all these benefits and more?

  • Improved sleep
  • Lower stress levels, less anxiety and depression
  • Lower risks of many diseases such as Heart Disease and Stroke
  • Helps you maintain a healthy weight
  • Increased opportunities to meet people and make friends
  • Greater confidence, self esteem and sense of achievement

Physical Activity for Particular Groups

Physical Activity is good for everyone but it is important to check with your GP if you have particular needs or conditions. This includes people who:

  • Are very overweight or obese
  • Are pregnant
  • Have never exercised or have not exercised for a long time
  • Have a disability or condition that may affect their mobility or ability to exercise
  • Are in the very young or very old age groups

Dundee Healthy Living Initiative supports local people to become:

  • Keep Fit instructors
  • Walk Leaders
  • Jog Leaders
  • Other volunteer opportunities
