Community Health Nurses

Dundee Healthy Living Initiative has Community Health Nurses (Registered Nurses) as part of the team, who are able to offer a whole range of services and activities in a non-traditional manner. This means that health services are brought into the community and offered in non-clinical settings, such as community centres, shopping centres, pubs and sheltered housing complexes. A range of activities offered by the nurses is given below:

Wellgate Shop for Health

The aim of this service is to improve the health of people in Dundee by providing health information and health checks within the shopping centre, thus enabling and empowering people to make informed choices about their health. Registered Nurses provide free confidential professional health advice and health checks. Health promotion leaflets and literature are available to take away.

The Shop For Health can be found at the following locations:

  • Wellgate Shopping Centre - On level three within the Wellgate shopping centre, every Thursday 12noon – 3.00pm
  • Asda, Kirkton - First Wednesday of the month 1.00pm – 2:30pm
  • Morrisons, Mill O'Mains - Last Wednesday of the month 1.00pm – 2:30pm
  • Tescos, Lochee – Commencing Monday 10th November 2008 – First Monday of the month 10.00am – 11:30am

Health Information Points

Nurses offer health information points within local community venues such as; community centres, pubs, shops, libraries and child and family centres. These are free and confidential.

The health checks include:

  • height, weight, body mass index
  • blood pressure monitoring
  • carbon monoxide monitoring
  • stop smoking
  • healthy eating
  • lifestyle advice
  • blood glucose testing

Health Talks and Demos

The Nurses from DHLI offer a variety of health information sessions to new and existing groups throughout Dundee.

Sessions are given on:

  • Breast awareness
  • Healthy heart
  • Diabetes
  • Child development
  • Menopause
  • Pre Menstrual Syndrome
  • Alcohol
  • Self esteem and assertiveness

and many more…

These sessions are fun and interactive and can include quizzes and videos. Sessions are run within your local community.
